Asphalt Repair: Stop the Damage Before It Spreads

Pavement damage is not static. A pothole that costs $300 to patch today will cost $3,000 to properly repair in six months — and $30,000 to reconstruct in three years. Understanding why pavement fails, and addressing the root cause rather than just the visible symptom, is the difference between a permanent repair and a recurring problem.

633 Asphalt & Construction LLC approaches every repair job with a diagnostic-first mindset. Before any material is placed, we assess the type and extent of damage, identify the underlying cause — whether drainage failure, base deterioration, freeze-thaw infiltration, or traffic overloading — and select the repair method that addresses the cause, not just the surface appearance.

This is why our repairs last. Property owners across Guthrie, Edmond, OKC, Tulsa, and our full 15-city Oklahoma service area call us back year after year — not because our repairs fail, but because their other pavement needs attention.

In Oklahoma, property owners can be held liable for injuries and vehicle damage caused by potholes and deteriorated pavement on their property. Residential driveways, commercial parking lots, and private roads all fall under premises liability law. Prompt repair is not just good maintenance — it is a legal protection.

6 Types of Asphalt Damage — And What Each Needs

Not all asphalt damage is the same. The type of failure tells you what caused it and what kind of repair will actually last. Use this guide to identify what you're seeing — then call us for a free assessment.

Potholes

New driveway installation, replacement of deteriorated concrete or gravel surfaces, and driveway extensions for single-family homes and residential properties. We size the base depth and asphalt thickness for residential vehicle loads.

Full-depth patch repair — filling only is a temporary fix. Permanent repair requires cutting, base rebuild, and hot-mix installation.

Alligator Cracking

Interconnected surface cracks forming a pattern resembling alligator scales. Indicates structural fatigue — the base layer has lost load-bearing capacity. Sealcoating will not fix this.

Full-depth patch removal of the affected area. The failed base must be replaced before resurfacing — surface-only treatment is a waste of money.

Rutting & Depressions

Wheel-path channels or sunken areas where the surface has permanently deformed. May indicate sub-grade instability, excessive traffic loads, or asphalt that was under-compacted during original installation.

Mill and pave or full-depth patch, depending on severity. Shallow rutting (<1 inch) may be addressed with overlay; deeper rutting requires structural repair.

Block Cracking

Large rectangular or square cracks dividing the surface into blocks. Caused by asphalt binder hardening and shrinking over time — common in Oklahoma due to UV exposure and temperature extremes. Usually not a base failure issue.

Crack sealing for early-stage block cracking. Widespread block cracking may indicate the surface is beyond maintenance and requires mill and overlay.

Raveling

Loose aggregate and granular material on the pavement surface — the asphalt binder has lost its grip on the stone. Surface appears rough, sandy, or gravelly. Often caused by over-diluted sealcoat, aging binder, or poor original mix design.

Sealcoating halts early raveling. Severe raveling with significant aggregate loss requires overlay or full resurfacing.

Edge Crumbling & Failures

Standalone base course work for projects requiring earthwork, grading, and aggregate base preparation before any surface paving. Includes compaction testing, drainage swale installation, and ADA-compliant slope grading.

Edge repair and shoulder stabilization. Includes removing the deteriorated edge, repairing the underlying material, and patching back to a clean, supported edge.

Asphalt Repair FAQ

How much does asphalt repair cost in Oklahoma?

Pothole patching runs $150–$1100 per pothole; full-depth patch replacement costs $4–$12 per sq. ft.; mill and overlay ranges from $1.20–$4.00 per sq. ft. The right repair method depends on the type and depth of damage. Call (405) 800-7166 for a free on-site estimate.

Potholes form when water enters asphalt through cracks or unsealed surfaces, saturates and weakens the base material, and is then displaced by vehicle traffic. Oklahoma's freeze-thaw cycles accelerate the process — water expands 9% when frozen, widening crack channels, then contracts as it thaws, leaving enlarged voids beneath the surface that traffic eventually breaks through.

Hot-mix patching is a durable repair when the base is intact — properly executed patches last many years. However, if the pothole resulted from base failure, patching the surface without addressing the base is a temporary fix that will fail again within months. Cold-mix (bag) patching is always temporary — it degrades quickly under traffic and Oklahoma's climate extremes.

Cold-mix patching can be performed in cold weather as an emergency measure to fill hazardous potholes. However, permanent hot-mix repairs require ambient temperatures above 50°F for proper compaction and bonding. In Oklahoma, permanent repair season runs April through November. If you have a dangerous pothole in winter, we can apply a temporary cold patch immediately and schedule the permanent repair for warmer weather.

Repair is the right choice when damage is isolated, the base is mostly intact, and the affected area is less than 25–30% of the total surface. Full replacement is needed when alligator cracking is widespread, the base has failed across large areas, the pavement is 20+ years old with no maintenance history, or cumulative repair costs are approaching 50% of replacement value. We give you an honest assessment — no upselling.
