Chloride-based deicing salts (rock salt, calcium chloride) penetrate concrete and can cause reinforcement corrosion and surface scaling — especially in the first year after placement. We recommend sand traction during the first winter and advise on alternative deicers (magnesium chloride is less aggressive) for long-term protection.

However, it costs 30–50% more upfront, takes 7–28 days to reach usable strength, and is significantly more difficult and expensive to repair than asphalt.

Concrete is the better choice for: ADA ramps and accessible routes (required to be stable, firm, and non-slip), curbs and gutters (structural concrete is standard), fuel islands and loading docks (petroleum degrades asphalt), heavy truck or forklift areas (rigidity handles concentrated loads better), and applications where a 40–50 year design life justifies the higher upfront investment. For most driveways and parking lots, asphalt offers a better cost-to-value ratio.

This includes maximum running slope (8.33% for ramps, 5% for walkways), cross-slope (max 2%), minimum clear width (36 inches), detectable warning surfaces (truncated dome pattern), and required landings. We document all slopes with a level during construction. Non-compliant accessible routes can result in ADA enforcement complaints.

Concrete cracks due to thermal contraction (it shrinks as it cures and cools), sub-grade movement (Oklahoma's expansive clays settle and swell), and overloading beyond design capacity. Random cracking is prevented through: proper joint spacing (control joints every 8–12 feet in residential, 12–15 feet in commercial), adequate reinforcement (rebar or wire mesh), correct water-cement ratio (max 0.45), and proper curing. We cannot guarantee zero cracking, but properly designed and installed concrete directs cracks to planned joint locations rather than random mid-panel paths.
