🌡️Summer Heat — Hot Weather Concreting
Oklahoma summer temperatures cause rapid concrete hydration and surface drying, leading to plastic shrinkage cracking before the concrete has set. We schedule hot-weather pours in early morning, use chilled mix water when needed, and apply curing compound or wet burlap immediately after finishing.

Oklahoma's freeze-thaw cycles cause surface scaling and spalling in concrete with inadequate air entrainment. We specify 5–7% air-entrained concrete for all exterior flatwork and avoid use of deicing salts during the first winter after placement — which can cause surface damage to freshly cured concrete.

Much of central Oklahoma has high-plasticity clay soils that swell significantly when wet. Concrete slabs on expansive soils without proper sub-base preparation will crack and heave as the soil moves beneath. We assess soil conditions and specify sub-base depth and geotextile fabric accordingly.

Concrete cannot be repaired by overlaying — drainage failures that cause water to pool on concrete surfaces will eventually penetrate joints and erode sub-base material. Chloride-based deicing salts (rock salt, calcium chloride) penetrate concrete and can cause reinforcement corrosion and surface scaling — especially in the first year after placement. We recommend sand traction during the first winter and advise on alternative deicers (magnesium chloride is less aggressive) for long-term protection.
