In Oklahoma, property owners can be held liable for injuries and vehicle damage caused by potholes and deteriorated pavement on their property. Residential driveways, commercial parking lots, and private roads all fall under premises liability law. Prompt repair is not just good maintenance — it is a legal protection.

Not all asphalt damage is the same. The type of failure tells you what caused it and what kind of repair will actually last. Use this guide to identify what you're seeing — then call us for a free assessment.
Potholes
New driveway installation, replacement of deteriorated concrete or gravel surfaces, and driveway extensions for single-family homes and residential properties. We size the base depth and asphalt thickness for residential vehicle loads.
Full-depth patch repair — filling only is a temporary fix. Permanent repair requires cutting, base rebuild, and hot-mix installation.
Alligator Cracking
Interconnected surface cracks forming a pattern resembling alligator scales. Indicates structural fatigue — the base layer has lost load-bearing capacity. Sealcoating will not fix this.
Full-depth patch removal of the affected area. The failed base must be replaced before resurfacing — surface-only treatment is a waste of money.
Rutting & Depressions
Wheel-path channels or sunken areas where the surface has permanently deformed. May indicate sub-grade instability, excessive traffic loads, or asphalt that was under-compacted during original installation.
Mill and pave or full-depth patch, depending on severity. Shallow rutting (<1 inch) may be addressed with overlay; deeper rutting requires structural repair.
Block Cracking
Large rectangular or square cracks dividing the surface into blocks. Caused by asphalt binder hardening and shrinking over time — common in Oklahoma due to UV exposure and temperature extremes. Usually not a base failure issue.
Crack sealing for early-stage block cracking. Widespread block cracking may indicate the surface is beyond maintenance and requires mill and overlay.
Raveling
Loose aggregate and granular material on the pavement surface — the asphalt binder has lost its grip on the stone. Surface appears rough, sandy, or gravelly. Often caused by over-diluted sealcoat, aging binder, or poor original mix design.
Sealcoating halts early raveling. Severe raveling with significant aggregate loss requires overlay or full resurfacing.
Edge Crumbling & Failures
Standalone base course work for projects requiring earthwork, grading, and aggregate base preparation before any surface paving. Includes compaction testing, drainage swale installation, and ADA-compliant slope grading.
Edge repair and shoulder stabilization. Includes removing the deteriorated edge, repairing the underlying material, and patching back to a clean, supported edge.
